House Committee Members Seek to Protect SNAP Funding

Some members write to the House speaker regarding the food program that is part of the farm bill.

Certain members of the House Agriculture Committee wrote to Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, urging him to not force further financial cuts to SNAP, America’s largest food aid program.

The House of Representatives renews federal farm and nutrition programs through the passage of a bill every five years, and the deadline to pass the next farm bill is at the end of this September. The bill is usually drafted by the House Agriculture Committee before being passed along to the House for a full vote.

Speaker McCarthy has expressed support for cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), one of a large number of programs within the farm bill.

The members of the minority party asked the House speaker to let the panel “work its will, and then respect the product that we hope comes out of our process later this fall.”

Representative Austin Scott of Georgia has suggested that SNAP be separated from the farm bill.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For House Speaker McCarthy as he considers the request from members of the agriculture committee.
  • For Congressman Scott as he proposes the food assistance program stands separately from the farm bill.
  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they negotiate the programs that are included in the five-year legislation.
